4 Ingredient Bagels

Before quarantine, our family started many of our weekend mornings with a walk down to our local bagel shop. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been missing that tradition, so last weekend I decided to make some bagels for us at home.

This is one of those magical recipes that seems almost too good to be true. With just four ingredients – flour, baking soda, salt, and greek yogurt, you can make homemade bagels right at home. No yeast, no proofing, no boiling required – just a simple dough baked in the oven. The result is a perfect bagel, crisp on the outside, light and fluffy inside, and surprisingly packed with flavor. Believe me when I say that this is a must-try.

The first step to making these is mixing the dry ingredients with the Greek yogurt. Be sure to use Greek yogurt because regular yogurt will make the dough too sticky to work with.

Once the dough is incorporated, it’s time to transfer it onto a floured work surface (I used a floured silicon mat) and knead it until it no longer sticks to your hands. At this point, the dough might need a bit more flour to come together depending on the consistency of your yogurt, so add some as needed (up to about 3 additional tablespoons).

After kneading the dough, divide it into four equal sized balls. Poke a hole in the center of each and stretch gently to create a bagel shape. At this point, I recommend brushing on an egg white wash (just 1 egg white) to ensure that the bagels will have a nice golden brown color. After that, top with your desired toppings and place them on a greased baking sheet.

For ours, I used Trader Joe’s ‘Everything but the Bagel’ seasoning and poppy seeds, but you can use whatever you prefer! A few ideas for toppings:

  • Sesame seeds
  • Asiago cheese
  • Jalapeno and cheese
  • Chocolate chips
  • Cinnamon sugar

The possibilities with these are truly endless. This is a base recipe, but you may want to incorporate different toppings or seasonings into your dough, depending on the flavor of bagel that you’d like to make.

We decided to use our finished bagels to make some bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches, which were a huge hit! This is a really fun and easy way to bring some of your bagel shop favorites to life at home. Hope you enjoy it!
